Aim

Learn from the history of the Finnish houses what can contribute to the sustainable reconstruction of housing today

History

What role did prefabricated architecture have in reconstruction after crises in the examined areas?

What were the mechanisms of production and dissemination of the houses, and which participants (governments, manufacturers, and dwellers) were active in the distribution?

Adaptation

How have the buildings been used, changed, adapted and re-used after their original function as shelters ended?

How has the landscape around the buildings been shaped to integrate this architecture in the local landscape and cultural context?

Assembling a home

Which traits in the buildings contributed to the inhabitants and communities experience of security and identity initially and in later stages of use?

Did they become a “home”?

What kind of image and values does the architecture connote today?

Can they be regarded from a perspective of cultural heritage?

Sustainability

How can historical experiences influence contemporary problems?

Which materials and solutions in design and placement are the most versatile for adaptation?

What can be learnt from these houses so that temporary housing in todays’ crisis areas can function for half a century if needed?
